Shiva is ‘that which is not’, a primordial emptiness; Shiva is also the first-ever yogi, Adiyogi, the one who first perceived this emptiness. Adiyogi is symbol and myth, historic figure and living presence, creator and destroyer, outlaw and ascetic, cosmic dancer and passionate lover, all at once. A book like no other, this extraordinary document is a tribute to Shiva, the Adiyogi, by a living yogi; a chronicle of the progenitor of mysticism by a contemporary mystic. Here science and philosophy merge seamlessly, so do silence and sound, question and answer–to capture the unspeakable enigma of Adiyogi in a spellbinding wave of words and ideas that will leave one entranced, transformed.

They would dance engrossed in ecstasy or would sit still in a calm state. At that stage, the tears flowing from his eyes were the only sign of his being alive. It was clear that he was having an experience that no one could have imagined. People started gathering around him taking interest, but he did not pay any attention, so gradually the crowd started to disperse. There were only 7 serious seekers left. He begged, “Please, we want to know what you know?” Seeing his request, Adiyogi initiated him to the initial spiritual practice. He meditated with full concentration for eighty-four years, and during this time Adiyogi did not pay any attention to him. Then, at the beginning of Dakshinayana, Adiyogi found that he was shining like a beacon of knowledge. After observing him for a full twenty-eight days, on the night of the full moon he transformed himself into the first Guru or Adi Guru. Today we know this night as Guru Purnima. On the banks of Kanti Sarovar, Adiyogi began to teach the science of yoga to his first seven disciples. The same seven disciples are known as Sapta Rishis.
He presented 112 ways through which human beings can reach their maximum potential by going beyond their limits. Adiyogi gave the means of personal transformation because this is the only way to transform the world. His basic message is, “Turning inward” is the only means to human well-being and liberation. The time has come for us to work with conscious techniques for the welfare of man.

Adiyogi Was the Father of Yoga

We all talk about yoga, but do you know when and how yoga started? Let’s see what Sadhguru has to say…
Talking about the spiritual nature in India, everyone has one goal – liberation. Even today everyone knows the meaning of the word liberation. Ever wondered why this is so? In fact, most of the work of spiritual development and shaping of human consciousness in this country is due to one personality. Do you know who he is? He is Shiva. More than 15 thousand years ago, Shiva attained siddhi and performed a fierce and captivating dance on the Himalayas. He would dance madly in ecstasy for a while, then calm down and become completely motionless.
It was the Adi Yogi Shiva who gave birth to the possibility that mankind can go beyond the limits of its present existence. You have to live in worldliness, but do not live in it. You have to use your body and mind in every possible way, but there is no need to suffer its sufferings. That is to say, there is another way to live. In our yogic culture, Shiva is not worshiped as God. In this culture, Shiva is considered as the Adi Yogi. It was Shiva who sowed the seeds of Yoga in the human mind.

According to Yoga Vidya, more than 15 thousand years ago Shiva attained siddhi and performed a fierce and captivating dance on the Himalayas. He would dance madly in ecstasy for a while, then calm down and become completely motionless. No one knew anything about this unique experience of his. Eventually the interest of the people grew and they were eager to know about it, gradually reaching out to him. But nothing happened to them because Adi Yogi was completely unaware of the presence of these people. They had no idea what was happening around them! Those people waited there for some time and then came back after getting tired.
But there were seven of those people who were a bit obstinate. He decided that he would stay after knowing this secret from Shiva. But Shiva ignored them. You have to live in the world, but do not live with it. You have to use your body and mind in every possible way, but there is no need to suffer its sufferings.
Finally he prayed to Shiva to tell him about this secret. Shiva did not listen to them and started saying, ‘I am a fool.
